Who said a soft drink has to be overwhelmingly sweet? Razzle is a Belgian organic soft drink based on kombucha - fermented tea - fresh and grown-up, with no alcohol and no artificial sweeteners. Just as good for quenching your thirst at home as with a meal or at a bar.

This bottle is Razzle in concentrated form, with ginger and lime. Add water and one 500 ml bottle makes sixteen glasses. So you are not shipping water you already have from the tap, and you get a surprising base for cocktails too.

How we calculate this

1. What we compare with. Not the sweetest soft drink, but the average one people actually buy: 60% regular (10.6 g sugar per 100 ml) + 40% zero or light (0 g) = 6.36 g per 100 ml.

2. What you drink less of. Razzle contains 3,40 g per 100 ml. 6.36 − 3,40 = 2,96 g per 100 ml, so 29,6 g per litre. Divided by 4 g (1 cube) = 7,4 cubes per litre.

3. What this bottle gives you. Diluted, it makes 4,4 litres of drink (16 glasses of 275 ml). 4,4 x 7,4 = 32,56 cubes.

What the 40% estimate rests on: UNESDA, the European soft drinks federation, states itself that zero and light versions now account for over 40% of soft drink sales in Europe, and over 50% in some countries. We deliberately take the lower bound: that makes our own claim smaller, not bigger. No figure specific to Belgium was publicly available.

Note: Razzle is not sugar-free. Kombucha is fermented tea and naturally contains sugar; nothing is added, sweeteners included. The figure shows what you drink less of versus an average soft drink.

Why this matters

Picture them on the table: 32,56 sugar cubes you do not drink with this product. The World Health Organization advises a maximum of about 25 g of free sugars a day - roughly 6 cubes. That is about 5,4 full days at that limit. Sugar you never drink is sugar you never have to burn off.

How we calculate this

For this product, about 4400 g of crop grew: the fruit in the juice, plus the tea and the sugar in the kombucha. Organic certification covers every agricultural ingredient, not just the fruit.

Conventional growing uses about 0.27 g of synthetic pesticide per kg. Organic growing uses none at all. 4,400 kg x 0.27 = 0,748 g of synthetic pesticide never used.

Why we count only synthetic substances. Organic growing also uses crop protection — sulphur, copper — and more of it by weight. The difference is in which substances. From research comparing every substance approved in Europe: 55% of those allowed only in conventional farming carry a hazard pictogram, versus 3% of organic ones. 16% warn of harm to the unborn child, suspected carcinogenicity or acutely lethal effects — for organic, 0%. Those are exactly the substances this product avoids.

What conventional growing uses. In the Netherlands in 2020, about 21 kg of pesticide per hectare went on apples. At a harvest of some 40 tonnes per hectare that is ~0.5 g per kg of fruit. Estimate: we count only half of that as synthetic (0.27 g/kg). Sulphur is used in both systems and is not synthetic, so we deliberately count low.

Which crop we count. The fruit in the juice, plus the tea and the sugar in the kombucha: organic certification covers every agricultural ingredient, not just the fruit. Estimate: for the bottles Razzle does not publish the kombucha share; we use the 17% it states for the concentrate, and the classic ratio 1 litre of water : 5 g of tea : 70 g of sugar (~10 kg of cane per kg of sugar). As soon as Naya Drinks confirms the recipe, we will adjust it.

The organic label is not a promise but an inspection: European organic certification bans synthetic pesticides and is checked on site every year by an independent body.

Why this matters

A pesticide is designed to kill living things. It rarely acts only on the creature it was meant for. That is why Europe sets the drinking-water limit at 0.1 microgram per litre - half a sugar cube spread across fifty Olympic swimming pools.

But a limit does not yet say why it matters. This does: in areas of the Netherlands where the water held high concentrations of the pesticide imidacloprid, bird populations fell by 3.5% a year - measured in Nature. Not because birds drink it, but because their food disappears: the insects. Europe's own food safety authority EFSA called the same group of substances an unacceptable risk to bees.

Fewer insects means less pollination, fewer birds, and ultimately less of what ends up on our own plates. For this product, not one of those substances was used.

How we calculate this

We compare this bottle with our own 16 bottles, not with an average soft drink. Same drink, same glass, same brewer, same lorry — so only what genuinely differs is left.

16 empty 275 ml bottles weigh 16 x 170 g = 2,720 g of glass. This syrup bottle weighs 260 g. That is 2,460 g less glass, or 90% less glass for the same 4.4 litres of drink.

1. Glass that is never made. Making glass costs at least 0.63 kg CO per kg. 2.46 kg x 0.63 = 1.55 kg CO.

2. Weight that is never shipped. Besides the glass, the water does not travel either: 16 bottles hold 4.4 litres, this one only 0.5. Together 2.46 kg of glass + 3.9 kg of water = 6.36 kg less on the lorry. Over some 150 km x 0.101 kg CO per tonne-kilometre = 0.10 kg CO.

Together 1.55 + 0.10 = 1.65; rounded down conservatively to 1.60 kg CO per bottle. The glass weighs by far the heaviest: transport is only 6% of the total.

The weights: weighed by us. An empty 275 ml bottle = 170 g, this syrup bottle = 260 g. Checkable on a kitchen scale.

The CO of glass: derived from a Carbon Trust comparative study of soft drinks packaging (co-funded by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners), which puts single-use glass at 0.39-1.05 kg COe per litre packaged. Our bottles carry 0.618 kg of glass per litre, which works out at 0.63 to 1.70 kg CO per kg of glass. We use the lower bound of 0.63 — that makes our own claim smaller, not bigger.

Carbon Trust: carbon footprint of soft drinks packaging

The CO of transport: we use 0.101 kg COe per tonne-kilometre for a European 34-40 tonne lorry, fuel production included (GLEC v3.2 / DEFRA 2025). Estimate: the 150 km distance (brewer → warehouse → customer, within Belgium) is an estimate. It carries little weight: transport is only 6% of the total, the rest is the glass itself.

Why not compare with an ordinary soft drink? Our bottles are single-use glass — the heaviest packaging there is. An average soft drink comes in PET or a can and does better. A CO claim for the bottles would therefore be wrong, and we do not make one. Only the concentrate wins, and we show that against our own bottles.

Why this matters

CO is invisible, which is exactly why it is so easy to ignore. So make it visible: the 1,60 kg of CO you avoid with this product is roughly 16 km you did not drive.
